Replacement of Century Road Bridge (Bridge No. 020046b) Over Sprout Brook

Project Features:
  • Replaced the existing Century Road Bridge over Sprout Brook (Structure No. 020046B), originally constructed in 1944, due to critical structural, hydraulic, and scour deficiencies.
  • Designed a new single-span bridge to meet current AASHTO and NJDOT standards, improving safety, load capacity, and long-term performance.
  • Widened the bridge and roadway to provide two 12-foot travel lanes, 8-foot shoulders, and a 5-foot concrete sidewalk along the south side.
  • Utilized prestressed concrete box beams with integral abutments on steel H-piles to deliver a jointless, low-maintenance structure and reduce construction duration and cost.
  • Developed roadway realignment and profile adjustments to accommodate widening, horizontal curvature, and tie-ins beneath the adjacent Garden State Parkway overpass.
  • Addressed floodplain and hydraulic constraints by matching upstream and downstream conditions in compliance with NJDEP requirements.
  • Coordinated extensively with utility owners to accommodate and protect major gas, water, communications, and overhead electric utilities located on and near the bridge
